Economic Development

The mission of the Economic Development Department is the strategic, efficient, and productive development of resources designated by the Tribal Council, for the benefit of the Pueblo of Sandia.  Resources available to the Pueblo include current revenue streams, land and water, infrastructure, the ability to control development on the Pueblo’s lands, the Pueblo’s policies, its relationships with other governments, and the work force.

The specific objectives of the Economic Development Department are to:

  • Provide a “one-stop shop” for responding to proposals for economic development from potential investors and developers by seeking guidance from the Tribal Council and, for those proposals in which the Council expresses an interest, carrying out cost-benefit analyses, due diligence and other follow-up activities required by the Council.
  • Establish a policy framework for economic development activities and, for geographic areas and types of projects approved by the Council, implement a proactive program seeking out potential business, amenity and community development activities which have the potential to provide net direct or indirect economic benefits to the Pueblo.
  • Assist in the development and negotiation of legal and financial contracts with potential investors and developers in line with the Tribal Council’s instructions.
  •  Propose and help develop business, marketing and management strategies and plans for the enhancement of existing tribal enterprises and the creation of new tribal enterprises.
  • Help ensure that any new economic development activity on tribal lands is consistent with the high quality and superior design of existing tribal enterprises.
  •  Contribute to the Tribal Council’s policy-making by assessing the potential impact on the Pueblo of federal, state and local policies and plans for gaming, taxation, business, industry, economic development and infrastructure.
  •  Carry out economic research and analysis needed to support the Pueblo’s public relations efforts, strategic positioning and communications in the Albuquerque area, the state of New Mexico and the Native American population.
  • Collect, collate and analyze demographic, statistical and other economic data relevant to the Pueblo’s economic development initiatives and opportunities.
