Sandia Resort & Casino

Sandia Casino opened its doors in 1984 with only a small bingo operation. Today the Casino has a few thousand employees and offers a full array of exciting Vegas-style games such as slots, blackjack, craps, keno, roulette and a large poker room. Revenues from the Casino operation are mostly responsible for the Pueblo’s expansion into other enterprises that help to sustain a self-sufficient community.

Sandia Lakes Recreation Area

Sandia Lakes Recreation Area is a public fishing area located on N.M. 313, just north of the intersection of 2nd and 4th streets. It offers an ideal escape from the urban environment. Shaded by some of the oldest cottonwoods along the Rio Grande River and surrounded by Bosque wildlife, visitors can fish year-round in three stocked lakes totaling 18 surface acres. A state fishing license is not required. Catfish are stocked from June through August; trout, from September through May and largemouth bass reproduce naturally in the lakes.

The Pueblo has made recent capital improvements including a new bait-and-tackle shop, wheelchair accessible trails, improved parking and picnic areas, a new playground and the Harvard Water Quality Classroom. Sandia regularly welcomes school groups for fishing clinics and environmental education.  Wild geese, blue heron and the occasional bald eagle are only a few of the species the children encounter.

With fishing, wildlife viewing, picnicking, and a softball field, the Lakes caters to families and groups who are looking for a getaway to nature. The canopy of cottonwoods blocks the sights and sounds of the city, providing a sense of exclusion from the hectic pace of city life and a pleasant recreational experience.
